Pillar two of six

Answer engine ready

People no longer only search, they ask. An answer engine ready page is structured so that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's AI features can read it, trust it, and cite it as the answer. AutoHive builds every page for all five disciplines at once.

Being found used to mean ranking. Now it also means being quoted. The structure that wins the citation is engineered, not hoped for.

One page, five examinations. Every AutoHive build sits all five.

Digitally Driven Growth, Naturally

The shift

What does answer engine ready actually mean?

It means a page an AI system can lift a correct answer from: question shaped headings, the answer inside the first forty words, structured data that labels every fact, and an identity block that tells every engine exactly who you are.

This is no longer speculative. Google's own inspector now ships an agent accessibility audit group, including a check for an llms.txt file.1 The schema.org vocabulary supplies the machine labels, Article, FAQPage, DefinedTerm, that answer engines parse.2 And the llms.txt proposal gives language models a concise map of your site at the moment they need it.3 An agentic build wires all of it in from the first line.

See it, do not take our word

How does an answer engine choose who to cite?

It does not rank ten links, it selects one answer and credits its source. Watch the difference, then watch structure win the credit.

The same question, two engines

The question: who builds POPIA compliant websites in Somerset West?

Ten blue links about web design

A page of results. The visitor does the reading, the comparing, and the choosing.

Directory listing, agencies near you

Position decides visibility. Position is earned by classic SEO.

An article from 2021

Stale content still ranks sometimes. It rarely gets cited.

From rambling to quotable

The same information, twice. Only one version can be lifted.

At our company we have always believed that websites matter, and over the years, after many projects and much learning, we came to feel that perhaps the most important thing, among several important things, could well be how quickly a page loads for the person visiting it, although design also counts for a lot.

The five disciplines, one page

Tap a discipline. Every AutoHive page is built to sit all five examinations at once, because each one feeds the next.

Every term, explained

What do all these terms mean?

Plain definitions, no jargon left standing. Open any term.

Answer engine

An AI system, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, that answers a question directly and credits its sources, instead of returning a ranked list of links. Winning here means being the credited source.

SEO, search engine optimisation

The classic discipline: crawlable links, clean technical structure, speed, and relevance so search engines can rank the page. It remains the entry ticket, the floor every other discipline stands on.

AEO, answer engine optimisation

Structuring content for extraction: question shaped headings, the direct answer in the opening words, and concise paragraphs an engine can quote without editing.

GEO, generative engine optimisation

Making content easy for generative AI to lift accurately: one topic per section, clear heading hierarchy, short facts with named sources, and content refreshed rather than left to age.

AIO, AI overview optimisation

Becoming the source an AI treats as definitive enough to cite in an overview. Complete structured data is the backbone, it feeds the engine every fact in a language it parses natively.2

SXO, search experience optimisation

The conversion discipline: once a person lands, the page must be fast, clear, and trustworthy enough to act on. Good experience signals loop back into how machines judge the page.

Structured data and schema

Machine readable labels from the schema.org vocabulary, Article, FAQPage, DefinedTerm and hundreds more, embedded invisibly in the page so engines know exactly what each fact is.2

Entity

A thing engines can identify unambiguously: a business, a person, a place. An identity block that states who you are, whom you serve, and what makes you different anchors your entity so engines describe you correctly.

Inverted pyramid

Answer first, detail second, background last. The oldest rule in journalism turns out to be exactly how extraction works: whatever leads gets lifted.

E-E-A-T

Experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness, the qualities engines look for when deciding whom to believe. Real authorship, real credentials, and honest claims are the signal.

Retrieval augmented generation

How many AI systems answer: they retrieve relevant pages first, then generate the reply from what they retrieved. Pages structured for clean retrieval get into the answer, the rest do not exist.

llms.txt

A proposed standard file at the root of a website giving language models a concise, curated map of the site.3 Google's Lighthouse now carries a check for it inside its agent accessibility group.1

Sources, triple verified

Where does this page get its facts?

Each source passed three checks on 22 July 2026: it comes from the supplier, it was retrieved and read in full, and its currency is stated honestly.

  1. Google Chrome team. Lighthouse source configuration, the agent accessibility audit group including the llms-txt check, read from core/config/default-config.js at github.com/GoogleChrome/lighthouse, repository updated 20 July 2026.
  2. Schema.org project. The live vocabulary source, data/schema.ttl at github.com/schemaorg/schemaorg, with the terms Article, FAQPage, and DefinedTerm read directly from it, retrieved 22 July 2026.
  3. Howard, J. The /llms.txt file, proposal of 3 September 2026 minus two years, 3 September 2024, read in full at github.com/AnswerDotAI/llms-txt. The proposal predates the twelve month window and is cited as the defining specification, with its adoption inside Google tooling confirmed by source one.

Statistics circulating about AI search adoption are deliberately absent until they pass the same three checks, held on the register as item 8.20.
